What does a statin do?

The cholesterol in your blood comes from two sources: food and your liver.

All statin drugs work in basically the same way. They reduce the amount of cholesterol made in your liver, and they help your liver remove more of this fatty substance from your blood.

Statins also bring down inflammation in your blood vessel walls and reduce the risk of clots forming around cholesterol buildup in your arteries.

These drugs can lower LDL cholesterol by up to 50 percent. Newer statins like Lipitor and Crestor are higher intensity and reduce LDL more so than older drugs like Pravachol and Zocor.
